If students are motivated to learn and engaged in the classroom activities, teachers often find troubling behaviors to be minimal or nonexistent. When an academic task or classroom activity is not engaging and/or motivating to students, they may exhibit disruptive behavior to gain the attention of peers or to escape the task at hand. The challenging part for special educators is to determine what individual students with exceptionalities deem as motivating and what types of instruction will keep the student(s) engaged.
For this Discussion, you will analyze research and evaluate strategies for increasing student motivation and engagement. As you do this, reflect on the students with whom you currently work or have worked with in the past and take note of the strategies you might implement in your future professional practices. Share the most effective strategies that you have identified with other stakeholders.

  • Read Chapter 9 of the course text, paying special attention to motivation and “won’t do” versus “can’t do.”
  • Read the Taylor, McNaney-Funk, Jardine, Lehman, and Fok-Chan (2014) article in the Learning Resources regarding teacher rewards. Think about how you increase motivation and engagement in your students and the reward systems you currently use or have used in the past.
  • Research evidence-based practices for increasing student motivation and engagement. Consider the strategies that have worked well in the past and what new strategies may be effective with your current students.

  • What strategies have you implemented in the past that have been effective in increasing student motivation and engagement? What strategies have you implemented that proved not effective, and why?
